Jeju-Do

October 16, 2009

We started early this morning with a little excursion to the beach town where Angela’s mother grew up near Pusan. We spent about 30 minutes there and got a taxi back to our hotel to get packed up and checked out. We left the hotel and grabbed another taxi to go meet Angela’s uncle who she hasn’t seen since she was only 2 years old. He is in a wheel chair so he had a friend helping him and his wife was there too. We met and tried to talk for a few minutes but soon realized our phrasebooks were not going to cut it. So the friend called another friend who spoke English and we talked through them. They invited us to lunch and gave us a ride to the airport. We had a nice Korean sit down meal while I showed them pictures of our wedding on my iphone.  We shook hands and we said our goodbyes.

We only had an hour until our flight left for Jeju Island so we just sat at the gate. Once we landed we took a long taxi ride to the south side of the island to see our hotel. This is a nice place so pictures will fallow soon.

A Day of Pusan

October 15, 2009

We spent the afternoon doing a walking tour around Pusan. Our first stop was the Korean War/ UN cemetery, where 2300 or more troops are still buried from around the world. It was a beautiful memorial with some great landscaping. From there we headed down to the boat docks where there was a huge fish market, where people could order fresh fish and have it prepared right in front of them for their lunch.  We had to get back to the hotel because I had an appointment for a 2.5 hour Thai massage, which was an incredible experience.

Tomorrow we fly south to Jeju-do Island for a relaxing couple of days, before we fly back to Seoul.

Daegu to Pusan

October 14, 2009

Easy day with a train ride to our next town of Busan. We have a great hotel once again, this time it overlooks the beach on the southeast corner of Korea. We really just spent the afternoon walking around our little section of beach. The Pusan International Film Festival is going on right now so there is plenty of extra night life and foreign folks walking around the streets. We took a nice walk out to a point where I could see the beach and the “diamond bridge” out in the distance. The temps are very cool and comfortable and the sun has been shining plenty. Some pics from our last morning in Daegu are included below.

Daegu Two

October 13, 2009

Day two in Daegu, Korea. We slept in which was needed, and then headed out to find a bus tour. The map we had was very unclear on where to start the bus tour, so we walked around looking for the ticket booth. A lot of places here have the same name, so that adds to the confusion, remember the missing street names?  So we never made it to the tour, but we did manage to find the hospital where Angela was born 33 years ago. She brought a copy of her birth certificate so we could make sure we had the right place. There we met a nice Nun who really wanted to help her and show us around town. Her brother lived in Warner Robbins, Georgia where he owned a restaurant. We needed to get back to our side of town and get some lunch so we declined her offer. On the way back we visited a herbal medicine market where you could get all kinds of weeds, roots, and even deer antlers put into a tea for drinking and healing. Dinner was at a very traditional Korean restaurant where they cook the meat at your table over hot coals. Sitting on the floor made my knees hurt but I was in the moment so it was all worth it.
